PADDLING BASICS

Like any skill, a kayaker will benefit from taking a training course before they get onto the water for the first time. The worst thing about not taking training is you will never know what you are doing wrong, plus you will ingrain bad habits and find it difficult to adapt later. We highly recommend that sit-inside kayakers wishing to paddle on the ocean take a training course.

"When we bought our kayaks and you said that you don’t sell kayaks unless you
do training I thought you only had a quick buck in mind. How wrong was I!

The training session on Saturday afternoon was really fantastic. Besides being
a lot of fun, it gave us so much practical knowledge. You training method of
tell, show and then do it yourself is great.

The “body” row, 3 methods of turning, rescue techniques, general safety etc.
has given us so much confidence that we would not have had. My wife now asks
when we are going into the sea again!

Thank very much for the session. We really enjoyed it."

This course is designed as a practical introduction to Sea Kayaking for complete novices. By the end of the three hour course the individual will have:
  • an understanding of the Health and Safety issues
  • knowledge of the affects of winds and other weather conditions
  • knowledge of the basic paddling strokes
  • launching and landing of your kayak
  • knowledge and experience of recovery techniques
  • knowledge of partner as well as self rescue techniques

Paddlers should then safely be able to continue to develop their skills as recreational paddlers under their own volition.

Courses in summer are held on a weekly basis on alternate Fridays and Saturdays.
In other seasons they are held less frequently and if there are no dates published below then telephone for details. Please call 021 786 2626 to book a course. The course cost is R450 per person, or R800 for a double. Cash payments only please, no credit cards. We also sell training in the form of vouchers to use as a gift.
If you don't have your own boat, kayak rental is only R150 for the course.

ESKIMO ROLLING
Once you have mastered the technique of self rescue and recovery and are considered a competent paddler then you may want to learn how to roll your kayak. The course is around 4 hours and costs R500. By the end of the course if you have not mastered the roll you should have enough knowledge and confidence to practise and master it yourself within a short while.

RESCUE AND RECOVERY
We strongly believe that you shouldn't go to sea if you have never been out of your kayak, and climbed, clambered or crawled back in or on, even with a bit of help! The course shows you how to self rescue and to rescue yourself with the aid of another paddler. This structured 90 minute courses costs R100
